Assembly & finishing

  1. Fit and attach the bobble coat

Identify the Body nose at its starting magic ring and the rear at its gathered closure. Slip the Bobble coat over the rear with its starting magic ring centered on the rear closure and its bobbles facing outward. Align the open rim around Body Rnd 10; the beige muzzle and front body remain exposed. Distribute the 36 rim stitches evenly around the 36 Body stitches at that round. With the brown tail, sew each coat rim stitch to the corresponding Body stitch, taking shallow bites of the beige fabric. Do not pull tightly enough to create a waist. Leave the coat unstuffed, secure the tail, and bury it between the layers.

    Back to round 24

  2. Attach both ears

Place the two Ears symmetrically on the upper left and upper right of the beige head at Body Rnds 8–9, immediately in front of the coat rim. Keep the curved edges upright and the straight lower edges against the Body. Viewed from the nose, leave approximately 6 Body stitches between their nearest inner corners across the top. Sew the straight lower edge of each Ear securely to the Body with beige yarn, leaving the curved edge free. Secure and bury both tails.

    Back to round 26

  3. Attach all four feet

Set the Body horizontally with its chosen underside facing down. Position the front pair of Feet beneath Body Rnds 8–9 and the rear pair beneath Body Rnds 13–14, one Foot on each side of the underside at each position. Point the rounded toes forward and slightly outward. At the rear pair, sew through both coat and Body fabric. Sew all 6 opening stitches of each Foot to the contact area, enclosing its stuffing against the Body. Check that all four toes touch the same surface before securing and burying the tails.

    Back to round 30

  4. Embroider the face

With black yarn, embroider a small nose over the Body starting magic ring using three short overlapping straight stitches. Add one eye on each upper side of the muzzle between Body Rnds 5–6. Center the eyes symmetrically about the top line of the muzzle, leaving approximately 5 stitches between them across the upper surface. Make each eye with two short straight stitches spanning one stitch width. Keep the embroidery relaxed so it does not dent the muzzle. Secure yarn ends with small anchoring stitches beneath the coat rim and bury the tails inside the Body.

    Back to round 14

  5. Finish and check

Check that the coat rim, two Ears, and four Feet are securely sewn. Push any inward-facing bobbles outward. Gently shape the muzzle, round the rear, and flatten the underside with your fingers. Confirm that the rear closure is covered, no stuffing is exposed, and every tail is secured and buried. Measure and record the finished length.

Maker tips

  • Count the top of each bobble once when working the following round.

  • Keep the coat rim relaxed while sewing so the beige body retains its rounded shape.

  • Use small pinches of stuffing in the nose and toes to avoid distorting their outlines.

  • Position all four Feet before completing their seams so the hedgehog sits evenly.

Troubleshooting

The coat stitch count increases after a bobble round.

Cause
An unfinished dc leg or an extra closing chain has been counted as a separate stitch.
Fix
Undo the affected section. Make each BO without an additional closing chain and work into its single top loop once on the following round.

The bobbles point into the coat.

Cause
The bobbles have settled toward the inside while being worked.
Fix
Push each bobble outward with a fingertip before attaching the coat, keeping the smooth side against the Body.

The coat creates a tight band around the body.

Cause
The attachment yarn has been pulled too tightly.
Fix
Remove the tight seam and redistribute all 36 rim stitches evenly around Body Rnd 10. Sew with relaxed tension and avoid compressing the stuffing.

The hedgehog rocks on its feet.

Cause
The Feet sit at different heights or contain unequal stuffing.
Fix
Reposition the affected Foot before securing its tail. Keep the upper openings soft and align all four toes on a flat surface.

Variations

Cream and chestnut hedgehog

Replace beige with cream and brown with chestnut yarn of the same weight and range. Keep all counts, pieces, embroidery, and assembly unchanged.

Care & finishing

Care

For the selected cotton yarn and polyester filling, gently spot-clean with cool water and mild detergent. Press out moisture without twisting, reshape, and allow to dry fully in moving air. Follow the actual yarn and stuffing labels if they give different care instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a no-sew hedgehog?

No. The brown coat, two Ears, and four Feet are sewn to the Body. The face is embroidered.

How are the spines made?

The coat uses five-double-crochet bobbles. Each bobble is worked into one stitch and counts as one stitch. The three textured rounds contain 42 bobbles altogether.

Is the finished size guaranteed?

No. The stated length is an unmeasured design target. Actual dimensions depend on yarn, tension, hook, stuffing, and assembly; measure a completed sample.

Has this pattern been tested?

No. This is an original, untested development draft requiring human review and a physical sample before publication.

Why are yarn quantities and making time not listed?

Consumption and making time have not been established through a sample. Record them during physical testing rather than treating unsupported figures as measured facts.
